Minecraft Dungeons is the action spin-off of Minecraft: a dungeon crawler where the voxel art and creatures come from Minecraft, but the gameplay is closer to a loot-driven action RPG than to a sandbox. If you have never played the series, here is the shape of it, and where the sequel fits.
The core loop
You control a hero fighting through mob-filled dungeons and regions. Power comes from loot: melee weapons, ranged weapons, armor, artifacts and, in the sequel, talismans. There is no mining, no crafting table and no placing blocks; the sandbox verbs are swapped for combat, builds and treasure hunting. The whole campaign is playable solo or with up to four players.
The series so far
| Game | Year | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft Dungeons | 2020 | The original: mission-based dungeon crawler, later expanded with six DLC packs |
| Minecraft Dungeons II | 2026 | The sequel: interconnected world, the Sift dimension, rebuilt equipment and enchanting |
The first game launched in May 2020 on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, and grew through DLC into an early-2021 ultimate edition. It remains the reference point most searches for the sequel are really asking about. How the sequel compares.
What Dungeons II changes
The sequel keeps the loop and modernizes the systems: the mission chain becomes an interconnected world, armor splits into four pieces, combat slots double to twelve, jumping finally exists, and the new Sift dimension gives the plot a second world to save. The gameplay overview.
Is it Minecraft 2?
No, and the confusion is worth killing: there is no Minecraft 2. Dungeons is a separate product line inside the Minecraft franchise, developed by Mojang Studios with Double Eleven. Searching "minecraft 2" will surface the sequel, but the main sandbox game continues on its own path, unnumbered.

Who is it for?
The series is deliberately accessible: family-friendly combat, no gore, simple controls with a high skill ceiling in the build systems. The first game worked as a couch co-op introduction to action RPGs, and the sequel's matchmaking and crossplay push the same direction. How co-op works.
FAQ

No. Dungeons II is a standalone game that shares the universe, not a mode inside Minecraft. Buying it requires nothing else.
Is Dungeons II on the same platforms as the first game?
Almost: PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch are all covered, and the sequel adds Switch 2. The first game's last-gen console versions have no equivalent this time. The platform list.
Is it a live-service game?
It is a paid game with planned DLC. The first game was supported with free updates and six paid DLC packs; the sequel has two packs dated with more dependent on performance.
