Minecraft Dungeons II was built co-op-first: the full campaign, from the burned camp on Squid Coast to the endgame in The Sift, is playable solo or as a party of up to four. There is no separate multiplayer mode to unlock and no content that requires playing alone. Because builds are individual, what your teammates bring matters: a party covers melee, ranged and support better than any solo loadout. The systems being combined.

The four ways to play
| Mode | How it works |
|---|---|
| Solo | The whole campaign, alone, with your pet and companions |
| Couch co-op | Up to four players on one screen, no subscriptions needed |
| Online | Up to four players across platforms, with crossplay |
| Mixed | Some players on one console or PC, others joining from elsewhere online |
Mixed co-op is the quiet upgrade over the first game: one player hosts on a couch while a friend joins from home, and both count inside the same four-player party.
Finding a party
You do not need three friends on speed dial. Dungeons II adds matchmaking to find players looking for a group, plus party codes that let a specific group connect directly without friend-list gymnastics. Between the two, drop-in co-op and planned sessions both work.
Co-op quality-of-life changes
Two friction points from the first game are addressed directly:
- Loot is automatically shared between party members, ending the scramble over dropped items.
- Reviving fallen teammates is faster, and the launch stream added a detail worth knowing: the more teammates join a revive, the quicker it completes. Group revives are the intended answer to boss pressure.
What carries over per player
Progression is individual: each hero levels, enchants and equips independently, so a lower-level friend joining a higher-level party still earns their own advancement. Loot rules mean nobody in the party is fighting over the same drop.
Is online play free?
The game itself charges no subscription, but console platforms do: Xbox consoles need Game Pass Core or Ultimate for online play, PlayStation needs PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo platforms need a Nintendo Switch Online membership. PC online play has no extra requirement. Platform list.
FAQ
Can two players play split-screen?
Couch co-op shares one screen rather than splitting it, in line with the series' isometric camera. Up to four players fit on one display.
Does crossplay need opt-in settings?
Crossplay support is built in at launch. No separate crossplay purchase or DLC exists, and the store listings advertise it as a launch feature. More co-op questions live on the FAQ.
Is there PvP?
No player-versus-player mode has been announced. Dungeons II is a co-operative dungeon crawler, and all announced modes are PvE.
